Wireless for Paragliders

Interfaces for a Smart Vario

For hanggliders and paragliders the variometer which shows lift and sink is the central instrument. Today's "varios" contain many more functions: flight planning, satellite navigation, collision warning, maps, flight recording and many more. These functions entail several interfaces, mostly wireless.

For Flytec/ Volirium, we developed and optimized several of those interfaces, both hardware and driver software. Using a holistic approach with software, electronics and logistics/ manufacturing at optimized overall cost a working solution for the end customers could be achieved.

Project Scope

Expertise and Technologies

We have used different wireless standards, like GPS (Global Positioning System), Bluetooth and 868 MHz wireless data. On the software side, Linux on an ARM platform was used and also direct (bare-metal) programming on a 8051 Bluetooth application processor.
