Flight test instrumentation: orange electronics box with measurement and recording devices for flight tests

Flexible Instrumentation for Helicopter Flight Tests

Customer's Challenge

The first Swiss helicopter required flexible flight test instrumentation (FTI). This system records measurement data from analog signals, strain gauges, vibration sensors, as well as ARINC buses and other sources. A significant portion of these signals must be transmitted from rotating components, such as the rotor head, to the helicopter; additionally, all important data must be available in real time at the ground station.

Outcome

A measurement data acquisition system for several hundred channels, housed in a vibration-resistant enclosure and equipped with connectors designed to withstand the harsh helicopter environment. Additionally, measurement data is transmitted to a ground station via modified Wi-Fi or LTE modems.

The software is flexible enough to be adapted by the customer’s test engineering team to the specific test flight. This also applies to the display at the ground station.

Wherever possible, the hardware consists of commercially available standard components, assembled to be mechanically robust.

Implementation

Solcept handled the entire systems engineering for the flight test instrumentation, developed the software, and integrated it with the electronics.

The LabVIEW software not only controls the measurement and records the data but can also be configured in a traceable manner via a spreadsheet.

Customer

The startup Marenco Swisshelicopter has developed Switzerland’s first helicopter, the Skye SH09, a 2.5 t turbine helicopter, from the ground up.
