If I Only Want to Read One Book: Which?

Recommended Reading on Different Topics

Not everyone gains their knowledge from books. I think that if a book is available, it is the best source of information.

But there are a huge number of books out there. Which ones should you read? Which book really has an impact?

Since I am often asked about this, here is a list of my recommendations:

Topic Book Comments
Project leqadership (for software-intensive projects) Tom DeMarco, Tim Lister: "Peopleware: Productive Projects and Teams"

The classic on software project leadership, a quick read, approx. 200 pages

Risk management in projects Tom DeMarco, Tim Lister: "Waltzing with Bears" Another thin book on how to manage risks with little effort
Leadership: Empowerment

L. David Marquet: "Turn the Ship Around!"

Easy to read, almost a novel
Leadership: Language L. David Marquet: "Leadership is Language: The Hidden Power of What You Say and What You Don't" The structure (“plays”) takes some getting used to for non-Americans, the content is very good and practical
Führung und Selbstführung

A. Gorbach, J. Dannath-Schuh, F. Cusumano: "Orientierung für Führungskräfte"

A slim book (120 pages) about the timeless fundamentals of leadership, especially self-leadership, containing many useful models and concepts that we apply on a daily basis

Unfortunately only available in German

Strategy Henry Mintzberg, Bruce W. Ahlstrand: "Strategy Safari: Your complete guide through the wilds of strategic management"

All strategy “schools” are categorized and commented on with humor

Andreas Stucki
