System Design of a ruggedized Tablet PC

For applications in harsh environments (e.g. on construction sites) a ruggedized, fanless tablet PC was defined together with our mechanics partner Marenco AG. The project spanned the requirements elicitation, the concept for electronics, display and mechanics for a full custom solution plus the analysis of suitable of-the-shelf products.

The concept for the custom system was based on COTS components, a custom base-board for interfaces and supply and full-custom mechanics to fulfill the harsh environmental requirements.

Challenge

A fanless tablet PC which survives falls on a hard floor and is operable with gloves at full sunlight

Result: Customer Benefit

A technical concept including effort estimation for development and production as the base for a make or buy decision

An exact technical specification as the fouandation for the development (in the "make" case) of for the evaluation and customization of a standard device (in the "buy" case)
